Where Will the Patient Die ?

All of my vivas have always been interesting and different. Well all, except my last medicine viva. I am not going to tell you what interesting thing happened in medicine, instead let me share with you this one-in-life-time experience in a Pharmacology viva, during my 4 end semester examination, 2009.
For the first time , Dr. Abdul, representative of Afghan Population , and Dr. Kmax, representative of Bhutan were answering a question to save their people. This is how it got started.
The Prof. took advantage of we being foreign nationality, and tried to give light to the viva. He said, " let me see where the patient will die. I will ask u a question and who ever gives the best answer, the patient in that country  lives. " As he said that i kicked Dr. Abdul's leg. I was thinking 'what the F*** is the Prof saying?' But anyways, he continued with the question and it was about diuretics, my favorite chapter...yes, it was, until my viva got started.

What type of Question is this ? " What drugs do you give for SITE I diuretics?" Well the question might be right to a pharmacology Prof. to ask a student in a viva, but what has it to determine if one is going to kill a patient or not ? That is why, in some ways, Medicine people are good. They would rather ask you, "give the indication for Diuretics?" or " when will you give diuretics? " because they think these are much tougher question than asking us the names of drugs.
It was Dr. Abdul's turn to answer the question first. He took the ball from the center of the football ground and kicked it right into the goal post. It was a score. The Prof. turned towards me expecting for an answer when it has already been answered. To be in the smarter side (hell to that) i told him the list of drugs for SITE II and III thinking that what ever work has remained unfinished in SITE I, the drugs in SITE II and III will do the job. There was practically no sense in repeating the answer Dr. Abdul said, unless i considered the Prof an idiot (oups!) .
And after some nodding of head(s), and some useless lectures , the patient died in Bhutan. Well it would happen if only God is as stupid as...

The Power of 8

Three of us hardly get together but when we do, something crazy or funny always happens. Dr Amit and Dr Abdul, 2 of my closest friends at A.I.I.M.S share something in common with me; we are all somewhere, some how deep inside depressed about some incomplete stuffs in life.

How exactly this day started... i have no idea. But we were celebrating that Saturday evening for some reason which totally made sense. We went for dinner to Select City Walk, Saket and on our way got ourself some important stuffs, without which , a party wont start these days.

We came back to the room.We had all the resources we need for a small meeting. For Dr. Abdul, there was his favorite Sprite. Dr. Amit had something else to share with me that night.. and the party started. After quite sometime.. we suddenly realized that we wanted to play Bluff- a silly card game where you need to be expert in lying and making sure the other person doesn't know. After an hour or so .. when the sip of a cocktail got into the nerves, Dr. Amit came out with a plan.

He started this way; " All of us are f**ked by one girl or the other, but we love them truly. Let us see how much does that girl love us. Pick a card and the number decides ".  He shuffled all the cards and made us pick a card each randomly . Then we all close our eyes, and showed the card. As we opened our eyes what we saw was 8-8-8.
For a second we were all silent and then started to laugh. In the excitement i took this picture, which reminds me of that day.
MBBS is so fun sometimes.. gives opportunity for self-discovery.

My First Micro Exam

3rd Mid-semester. I can never forget the day i gave my microbiology practical without even studying . Well to be true, i didn't even study for the exam. The day before the exam, i was wandering here and there with some notes. I had no idea what to study and how to study. Those photocopied notes that i had.. i didn't understand any thing. The exam was at 8 am in the morning, and me, completely unprepared went to face it with no knowledge of Microbiology.

First few questions confused me so much that i had to peep into my friend's paper. He was sitting in front of me. The problem with us, i mean those who wear extra eyes is that it is never too easy to focus sharply on what other is writing. I was trying too hard to stretch my neck and he was trying hard to bend his back so that i can see something. I was busy with what he was writing when some one far away shouted out "hey u there..." . I pretended not to see him and not to notice him, but then he said "the guy on the last bench wearing black t-shirt". I could no longer avoid him.  I was warmly welcomed to the first row... and given a privilege to sit where only Professors are allowed. It was difficult for me to write the answers, my brain was hurting more than my hands.

Some how ...don't know how how... i gave that exam, with nothing in my head, but i still kept my cool.

BUT It was not over. The next thing i had was Micro Viva and practical. I was so bright in micro, i had no idea. It was my grand viva, and i was told to hold a Culture plate. I was asked various questions like, "why do we use sheep blood, and why not a cat's blood" and "what is agar made of and what is the % we use" and blah blah blah ... and i could answer none of them. The Professor felt pity on me and asked, " were you too busy in PULSE?". I answered " Yes madam, i was so busy, i didn't get time to study."

It was not over yet. The next thing was microbiology practical. My friend said that this is the time where we will have to put some organism under the microscope and see if it is alive or dead. I was so curious to know how we should be doing it. We all moved towards the practical hall and all of us got our respective micro-org cultures in its small zoo. We also received a test tube with some liquid, i had no idea what it was for.
Everyone started to do GRAM stain, or what they called it inside the practical hall.I did exactly as my friend next to me was doing. He told me one thing. " if you don't know, do as i do."  So, i was just following his instructions.

some of my practical i did, he did some of them and some none of us could do. I never had enjoyed any exam more than that. I felt i was like those cool students in middle school days, staying in back bench and dreaming about their world. .. it was so awesome.
Now was the time for the viva of the practical . One weird b**ch came to question me. She was really nice in the beginning. She used words like "bachae" (child) ... and "batao" (tell)..and other mind pleasing words. Her first question was simple. She asked, " what did u see ? "
I had the freedom of speech. I said, " i see lot of bacteria under the microscope. Some of them are blue while some of them are red in colour. Some of them are colour less." With a constipated look, she then asked me " in the same field ?" With a proud smile i said, " yes madam."

She asked me to show bacteria motility and i said, "And in the next microscope i can also see a large bacteria." I showed her something , a size 1000000 times bigger than the biggest bacteria in the world. It was just an air bubble which i assumed it to be a bacteria. In fact i was rly excited after seeing it. I started believing it to be a bacteria. I could see the nucleus and the cytoplasm and everything that a bacteria wants.. But kash!!

She left me with a depressed mood and said to the Senior Resident, " i can't do with this kid, please take over."

The S.R came towards me and asked me questions like he was interrogating me. "Name some bacteria which are motile?" .. " what is gram positive bacteria?"..." Some bacteria which are oxidase Positive? "...and some other million questions for which all i could say was "nothing ". I answered to one of his question though;
" when will a non-motile organism appear motile?" i replied, " when there is change in light sir, the organism will appear motile." When the answer didn't please him i added, " when there is an earthquake sir."

Believe me, at one point of time in your life, you will regret not studying . you will regret not taking things seriously. You will certainly regret being so stupid showing both gram +ve and Negative org from the same culture in the same field under the microscope. You know the worst of all in Microbiology?? ' Not knowing how to perform a gram stain, and not knowing what is the difference between gram positive and negative"

After some days , i got the marks. I figured out i did quite well. I was the lowest in the class with 3.0/10 in practical and 2.6/10 in Theory.
I have no regrets now. I would have missed this moment if i had studied so well for that exam. I am glad i have this experience which no one else in my batch has. I am always proud to be me. :)

Plan hence forth

Since i don't remember everything that happened to me in chronological order , I am going to write this blog in random ways possible ..
please bear with me.
thank you :)

Day 1

First few weeks at AIIMS.

It was not easy to cover up everything in a month and be ready for the toughest exam of my life (the first of its kind) especially after relaxing at home for nearly 9 months.

I joined AIIMS on 7th September, 2007. If i had been a little late, i would have been more lucky as my first mid -semester exam would have been exempted, but unfortunately i happed to be too excited to leave home early for further studies.

The first day at college was a rather unusual one. I was introduced to my neighbour, Nizic (name changed) by my senior. I followed Nizic, where ever he would go, until i totally got pissed off with where he was taking me; into the class again !!!

The Day was Friday and Friday is a day where we have classes of all the subjects and addition to that a Physiology seminar. My dad insisted me to wear a shirt and black formal pants with black shoes.

As far as i remember that was not the first time i was wearing a shirt. The last time i had worn was when i was around 13 yr old. I was new to the class and the shirt was new to me.

But who cares ? The only thing i knew in that first class was ACTIN and MYOSIN ; some stupid proteins of muscles. Everything revolved around these two words, even the seminar but these two topics never ended. Believe me Actin and Myosin are more than just what we study in class 12 biology.

During the seminar, i followed my class mates and reached the seminar room in the Physiology Dept. When the seminar got over, i had to stay back to talk to the professor. it took me a while to finish talking and by that time all of my mates had already left. I was all alone in front of the seminar, didn't know where to go and which way will take me back to my sweet room.

After wandering in the corridors for a while, i figured out the way myself and went back to my room just to lie my dad that the first class was very interesting. Believe me, many people say the first few days during MBBS is an adventure,.. i say the entire life of a MBBS student is an adventure..you never know what happens next.

CRAZY ACTORS, FUNNY DIRECTORS

Video of: November, 2007 (1st semester MBBS)

Many of those memorable things i did, when i was in first year, was with this buddy.

Like this video for example. We had never thought it would one day be uploaded in facebook, youtube, and in this blog.
In fact, I don't even remember how it all got started. Three of us were trying to finish a bottle of pineapple flavoured imported Rum in his room and listening to the song NUMB by Linkin Park. Some how in the midst of the party we noticed his ex-laptop happened to have a webcam fixed. We thought, why not act it out !!

I don't remember why on this world, i was carrying a remote with the loose battery cover and my buddy a carpet-brush. The best scene in this video: hum ! My buddy holding his shoes (when the song says, "walking in your shoes") and the time the cigarette did not come out of his nose when he tries to blow.

The next day when i woke up, this video was already ready to be uploaded. I still like this video and miss this moment.
